BWB's full range of multi-disciplinary engineering services were utilised in the detailed design of the primary infrastructure required to facilitate the construction of over 2 million sq ft of industrial and distribution warehouse development on this challenging brownfield redevelopment site.

A new bridge carrying the primary access road over the river links the development to the Trunk Road network at the junction of Raynesway and the A6 Alvaston Bypass. The existing roundabout junction was converted to a grade separated junction, enabling the A6 to be connected directly to Raynesway and thereby creating a significant improvement to the trunk road network.

In addition to the complex highway works, BWB undertook extensive ground investigation, testing and monitoring works to supplement work undertaken previously by others, together with a comprehensive Flood Risk Assessment involving extensive 2D hydraulic modelling works. BWB's hydraulic solution to overcoming flood risk constraints is regarded as an exemplar project by Derby City Council and the Environment Agency in terms of development delivering betterment.

Key Challenges

This major junction improvement was designed by BWB to reduce congestion on the trunk road network and facilitate access to the industrial park. BWB's involvement in the project included:

- Traffic modelling of the new junction including micro-simulation
- Agreement of departures from geometric standards with the Highways Agency due to the constrained urban-edge location and adjacent River Derwent
- Preparation of trunk road and side road order plans and schedules
- Preparation of deposit documents, statement of case and proofs of evidence for the Public Inquiry plus the presentation of expert evidence at the inquiry
- Stakeholder engagement with the local community
- Detailed design of the highway works

The development was located on both sides of the River Derwent with a significant proportion of the site regarded as floodplain. BWB undertook a period of analysis using our own ISIS-TUFLOW model representation of the area to understand the required flood mitigation measures. This was further complicated by the need to design a highway bridge crossing of the river to link the two parts of the site, effectively cutting off a section of large floodplain. Following this period of optioneering and Flood Risk Assessment work, BWB undertook the detailed design of the site infrastructure and gained land drainage consent from the Environment Agency to the proposed features on-site.
