Despite appearances I am a structural engineer not a bouncer

Why I decide to do what I do

Growing up I wanted to be an Architect, a Pilot or a Dentist (don’t ask) at the time I had no idea what Structural Engineering was (some may say I still do not know much about it!) When I met the careers advisor we discussed the subjects I enjoyed, Technical drawing, maths and sciences. She then suggested that I may like to look into Structural Engineering. It was described to me as a career which was similar to an Architect but involved more maths and technical drawing. I thought OK, that will do, let’s give it a whirl.

My potted history

I grew up in a deprived area of the South Wales valleys with very little opportunity for a career. I promptly made my escape leaving home and moving to work for a Consultancy in Cardiff when I was 17. I started out as a trainee structural technician, tracing drawings, practicing my printing and losing my hair that I am sure was a result of using the old Ammonia printing machine that we used in the office to print A1 drawings! I graduated from the University of Glamorgan in the mid nighties via part time training route gaining my ONC, HNC and BEng qualifications. Rugby was and still is a huge part of my life both playing and supporting the game. I was lucky enough to represent my country at Under 18 level playing alongside some great players who went on to make a big name for themselves in the senior game. Scott Quinnell, ex Wales player and now Sky Sports Pundit was captain of the side. However a knee ligament and cartilage injury ended any hope that I would make it in the game (coupled with the fact that I enjoyed beer too much!) I emigrated across the border to Nottinghamshire in England with my family in 1999 where and took up a position with BWB.

The best project I have ever worked on at BWB

In terms of projects I think the ‘Conkers’ discovery centre was my favourite as it was a little bit different. But beating a lot of my footballing crazy colleagues in our fantasy football league when I know nothing about football, that was particularly satisfying and a fact that I constantly remind them about at every given opportunity!

What I like to do in my spare time

In my spare time I enjoyed playing rugby. I recently had a few games for Paviors RFC Veterans though where I quickly realised that the lungs are past their sell by date and so I moved into coaching. I have managed and coached Mini and Junior rugby at my local club Paviors RFC in Nottinghamshire, where my son plays, for the last 8 years. Outside of Rugby I enjoy music of all genres but I draw the line at Jazz, without doubt jazz is surely the work of the devil!! Love a good walk, a good film and malt whiskey.

What I hope to be doing 5 years from now

Be shortlisted for the first manned mission to Mars.
