Why I decide to do what I do

Growing up I didn't really have a good idea of what I wanted to do for a career. So after finishing university I applied for a range of jobs in different sectors and was accepted for a job in finance in London and a highways consultancy in Nottingham.

As I wanted to continue using some engineering knowledge from my degree I decided to join the highways consultancy. I found that I really enjoyed engineering and decided to make a career of it.

My potted history

I grew up in Essex and rather than go and work in London I drove my Ford Escort up to Nottingham University to do a Maths with Engineering degree at Nottingham University. I enjoyed being at university a lot, so I put off work for another year and got my masters.

After university, I joined a small highways consultancy to learn the basics of transport engineering. I joined BWB about 18 months later to gain experience on a wider range of projects.

In September 2010, after 6 years of working in BWB's Nottingham office, I took up the challenge and moved over to the Birmingham office to build up the transport team and to help to contribute to the continuing success of the office.

The best project I have ever worked on at BWB

New campuses for the College of West Anglia in King's Lynn and March as part of the Building Schools for the Future initiative. This was the first really big project I led and involved a lot of detailed technical work and liaison with the various stakeholders. We got everything agreed from a transport perspective and planning permission was granted. Unfortunately the funding was withdrawn so the new campuses were never taken forward.

What I like to do in my spare time

I like to run, cook, ski and catch up with friends either for a night out or weekends away in the country

What I hope to be doing 5 years from now

Working on some of BWB's prestigious international projects, hopefully somewhere with some good skiing.
