Laid back transport planner with an engineering background who delivers buildable and commercial highway solutions for development sites.

Why I decide to do what I do

I have always been interested in big buildings and architecture, which probably stems from a lego obsession when I was younger. Civil Engineering seemed the obvious choice. I was fortunate to complete a sandwich year degree and during my year out working in the industry I gained experience working in highway design, drainage design, flood risk and transport planning. Following graduation I got a job as a transport planner and have never looked back.

My potted history

I grew up in a small town in Hampshire, which I left as soon as possible following completion of my A-levels. I started a Civil Engineering degree at Nottingham Trent University in 1994 and graduated in 1998, which included a year out working at JMP in Lichfield. Following graduation I got a job working for WSP and spent a couple of years working for them in Basingstoke and London. I moved back to Nottingham in 2000 to ultimately marry my university girlfriend and start a family. In Nottingham I worked for JPA for three years, HSL for 18 months and joined BWB as a Senior Engineer in November 2004.

The best project I have ever worked on at BWB

RAF Upood was a good project as a large scale mixed use development which had many challenges. I learnt a lot on this project and challenged myself. The site ultimately went to appeal and involved the production of a proof of evidence and attendance at a major public inquiry. I also find that the best projects are the ones that actually get built so I can drag my family around the country and say I worked on that.

What I like to do in my spare time

Most of my free time is dominated by my two boys so building stuff with Lego, going on bike rides and going to the park. I also enjoy the odd ale, eating good Italian food and watching films when time allows.

What I hope to be doing 5 years from now

Wondering where the last five years went and how to recapture my youth.
