Why I decide to do what I do

I applied to be a Trainee Accountant but didn't get it. I then applied to be a Trainee Architect and didn't get that either. I applied to be a Trainee Engineer and got that!

My potted history

Barnsley MBC: I spent 4 years on the municipal engineering merry go round, which was great to get a good grounding in a lot of engineering disciplines, but settled on redevelopment and infrastructure as my chosen route. I worked mainly in colliery reclamation and development, of which there were a lot in Barnsley. Barnsley MBC were good enough to send me to study day release at the local polytechnic (Google it if you are under 30 years old).

BWB Partnership: Having moved to Ashby de la Zouch the 70 mile commute to Barnsley was getting to be a drag, so I looked around and picked BWB over Symonds Travers Morgan!! My experience on colliery redevelopment was put straight to good use. BWB were also kind enough to allow me to finish my part time degree and then support me on a part time MBA.

BWB Consulting: In my early thirties I felt the need to 'broaden my horizons' and moved on from BWB. However, the grass is rarely greener and so after a few years in the wilderness, I re-joined BWB hooking back up with my old boss Greg Nicholson - but this time in BWB's new office in Leeds.

In 2008, I was lucky enough to be selected to be part of the BWB MBO team and helped my fellow directors manage the difficult times in the few years that followed. I am proud of our achievements in helping to put BWB in its current position of strength as one of the UK's leading independently owned engineering consultancies.

The best project I have ever worked on at BWB

Prologis Park Redevelopment at Coventry. It was one of the first major projects that included all BWB's disciplines and where we earned our stripes for delivering major multi-modal enabling infrastructure. It also helped moved BWB to the front of the consultant pack in the UK industrial sector.

What I like to do in my spare time

Since hanging up the boots and when I'm not watching Man U win yet another title from the comfort of my armchair, I keep busy running around after my boy, cycling and messing about with gadgets - though not all at the same time!

What I hope to be doing 5 years from now

Hosting a reception party on the 175th floor of BWB's latest project.
