Hydraulic Modelling and Breach Analysis

BWB have extensive experience of modelling all aspects of the water environment and access to cutting edge software to develop models from scratch or adapt existing models. The different modelling approaches can be summarised as follows:

ONE DIMENSIONAL HYDRAULIC MODELLING

One Dimensional hydraulic modelling of river and sewer systems, can applied to strategic catchment scale to site specific assessments. Primarily used to derive flood level information, but it can also be used as a useful design tool, and be used in water quality and sediment transport assessments. One-dimensional hydraulic modelling is regularly used in flood studies, development based flood risk assessments, and in flood alleviation projects. It has also been successfully used to challenge EA flood zones. BWB utilises the standard UK software ISIS, HEC-RAS, ESTRY packages.

TWO DIMENSIONAL HYDRAULIC MODELLING

Two dimensional modelling offers a powerful tool for assessment of complex flow routing and floodplains. It has applications within fluvial, estuarine and coastal environments. It is often dynamically linked to a 1D hydraulic river or sewer model to add an overland flow routing element. This modelling approach is regularly used with flood risk assessments, floodplain mapping, hazard mapping and flood alleviation design projects. It has also been successfully used to challenge EA Flood Zones. BWB utilise the industry standard TUFLOW software package.

THREE DIMENSIONAL HYDRAULIC MODELLING

Three-dimensional modelling provides a tool for fine scale assessments of hydraulic structures within a fluvial, tidal or sewer environments. This modelling approach can be used to validate the operation of existing structures, as well as providing a design tool for new structures. BWB utilises the OpenFOAM software package.

BREACH ANALYSIS

Breach analysis involves the simulation of the potential flooding that could result due to a failure or overtopping of existing flood defences. Many areas are currently protected from flooding by breach analysis, using hydraulic modelling. It means that we can quantify the impacts of when these defences fail. BWB also use the findings of breach analysis to optimise flood mitigation strategies.
