Ground Gas and Vapour Investigation

Due to the number of developments being undertaken on brownfield sites, ground gas and vapour investigation and risk assessment forms a significant part of ground investigations.

There are a number of potential anthropogenic sources of ground gas or vapours, for example significant thicknesses of made ground, hydrocarbon or solvent soil or groundwater contamination, and historical landfilling operations. There are also a number of potential natural sources of ground gas, including Alluvial deposits, Coal Measures deposits and Radon emitting bedrock.

A thorough assessment of the ground gas concentrations beneath the site will enable the risks posed to a proposed development to be quantified and the appropriate mitigation measures to be designed and incorporated into the proposed development.

Where significant potential risk has been identified BWB can carry out bespoke gas assessment and complete further detailed quantitative risk assessment to better understand the gassing regime of complex sites.
