BWB were the civil and structural engineer for the prestigious redevelopment of the old Market Quarter of Wakefield Town Centre. The 500,000 sq. ft. scheme provides retail space over three floors configured around a central suspended 'mall' type pedestrian walkway. The scheme includes a 100,000 sq. ft. unit for Sainsbury's and 960 associated car parking spaces.

Working from concept to completion, BWB were a central member of the design team to make the project a success for the client. A victim of the 2008 GFC, the project went into administration and was rescued by a new client halfway through the build process. Critical to financial success were extensive changes to the scheme that required major structural alterations. The inclusion of a major ETFE roof extension and the levelling out of previously stepped retail units were amongst the biggest changes to the 6000T steel super structure. A quick appraisal from BWB on all client instructions enabled the client to make informed choices for change to ensure budget and programme remained in tight control by the main contractor.
