BWB were key members of the project team who successfully delivered the award-winning Bletchley Leisure Centre which was completed in January 2010. The £18million development was central to Milton Keynes Council's strategy for regenerating the area and featured a sports centre with 25-metre competition pool, four squash courts, sports hall, health and fitness suite and dance studio along with new housing.

BWB was commissioned by SDC as structural engineers for the project in addition to delivering civil engineering and highways services. Our transport planning team completed a Transport Assessment and Travel Plan which included including scoping meetings with Milton Keynes Council and a review of their new development highway infrastructure tariff. Our work also included a junction onto Princes Way and new pedestrian crossing.

Key Challenges

From the outset Milton Keynes Council set a target of BREEAM 'Excellent' for the leisure centre building so the project team took care to minimise the environmental costs by incorporating features such as a biomass boiler, and increased insulation. Good access to public transport and excellent construction management were also factors theat enabled the project to score a 79.6 percent BREEAM rating and ensured the council's target was met. The excellence of the building's environmental performance was shown when it went on to win first prize in the Bespoke category at the 2010 BREEAM awards.

The centre is also an exemplar for disability access with consideration made to incorporate special features for good access.
