BWB Consulting provided multi-disciplinary services for the £33 million Wakefield Eastern Relief Road scheme. The by-pass was designed to ease congestion in Wakefield city centre by providing a direct route from Aberford Road in the north to Doncaster Road in the south, while also offering direct access to the M62. The 2.7 mile road will also provide a gateway to the new 375-acre City Fields development which will comprise of 2,500 homes, parks, leisure facilities, business premises and retail areas. It is anticipated that the highway will lead to thousands of new jobs being created in the area.

BWB was appointed initially as civil engineers and applied our expertise to assist with the detailed highway design, utilities assessments and surveys, watercourse modelling and design and site investigation. Our working relationship with Wakefield Metropolitan Council led to further appointments for traffic signal design, topographical surveying and modelling while our traffic simulation visualisations were used by the local media to publicise the scheme. Construction work began in early 2015 with the road being opened to the public in April 2017 having been delivered both on time and on budget.
