CDS Solihull is an advanced manufacturing facility which is part of the Rolls Royce Group.

BWB are proud to be working on the Aero Engine Controls, part of the Rolls-Royce Group Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Facility at Solihull. The project started on site in September 2013.

This Advanced Manufacturing, Research and Development facility brings together two existing aging facilities into one brand new state of the art building. The facility incorporates production, assembly, product testing and office accommodation.

When operational, the facility will produce engine control systems for a range of applications, including the Rolls-Royce Trent family of aircraft engines.

BWB have provided Pre-Planning due diligence services in addition to the complex coordinated BIM model where we have produced our Construction information working collaboratively with other members of the design team.

Key Challenges

At first floor, the structure in the location of the materials testing laboratories needed to be designed to minimise deflections and vibrations due to the sensitive nature of the lab testing equipment. The first floor steel structure had to be locally isolated from the main frame and the mass of the concrete floor increased. The floor required a dense concrete slab cast as two independent, separated slabs on top of each other which gave the required isolation and mass to eliminate vibrations and achieve the required damping for the critical frequencies to be realised.

The main structural frame is a saw tooth portalised steel frame with extensive and complex services and plant coordination that needed to be considered in the design.

The project needed extensive fire and environmental strategies to be implemented due to the dangerous chemicals and fuels that are used in the production facility. Drainage systems were designed with an automatic control system to prevent spillages of and leakages into the wider drainage network.
The majority of the external works also have containment areas designed to accommodate fuel spillages such that any accidental spillages can be entirely dealt with on site with minimal environmental risk.
